Synopsis - In the second edition of the Voices of Evergreen series, we are focusing on five Educators who lived and worked in Austin. These educators taught generations of students from nursery school through university. Their commitment to education not only helped raise generations, it helped to raise them up. As we meet these five remarkable individuals, we will also learn about the challenges, rewards, disappointments and triumphs of teaching in the Austin schools throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
Note - This is a factual short film. These characters are based on real people.
Characters
Ty - Male, Age 16-28, African-American:
A charismatic and eager young African-American man who is curious about everything. He is jovial and ready to take on the world.
J - Male, Age 30-70, African-American:
An African-American man who worked as a teacher and was also an author of African-American folklore. He is a great orator and storyteller with a grand sense of humor.
Mary - Female, Age 30-70, African-American:
An African-American woman who worked as a teacher for many years in East Austin, Texas. She was also a children's author and had a passion for teaching. A school is named after her.
June - Female, Age 30-70, African-American:
An African-American woman who was one of the first African-American students admitted to the University of Texas at Austin, immediately following the United States Supreme Court's decision in Sweatt v. Painter. She received a doctorate and taught English at Huston-Tillotson College for thirty-five years.
Hazel - Female, Age 30-70, African-American:
An African-American woman who worked as a teacher for many years in Austin, Texas. She also taught at the University of Texas.
Lillian - Female, Age 30-70, African-American:
An African-American woman who worked as a teacher for 42 years in public schools, teaching generations of children in Austin, Texas.
